The municipality of Trbovlje covers 58 km2. It ranks 122nd among Slovenian municipalities in area size. place.

The municipality had 15,958 inhabitants in 2023 (7,910 men and 8,048 women). An average 274.6 people lived per square kilometre of the municipality, which means the population density was higher than the national average (104.4 inhabitants per km2).

In 2022, the number of live births was lower than the number of deaths. Natural increase per 1,000 people in the municipality was negative with -8.5 (-2.3 in Slovenia). The number of people emigrating from the municipality was therefore higher than the number of people moving here. In 2021, the net migration per 1,000 inhabitants in the municipality was negative with -0.9. The sum of the natural growth and net migration per 1,000 inhabitants in the municipality was negative with -7.4 (-0.9 in Slovenia).

The average age of the inhabitants in 2023 was 46.8, which is higher than the Slovenian average (44.0).

The statistical data for 2021 indicate that as in most municipalities, the number of older people was higher than the number of young people: for every 100 people aged 0–14, there were 184 people aged 65 or over. This ratio shows that the value of the ageing index for this municipality was higher than the national average (139). It also shows that the mean age of people in this municipality is growing more rapidly than the Slovenian average. ex-disaggregated data show that the ageing index for women in the municipality was higher than the ageing index for males. As in most Slovenian municipalities, there were more women over 65 than those under 14; the situation was the same for men.

According to the statistical data for 2021, the municipality has 6 kindergartens with 532 children attending them. Of all the children in the municipality aged 1–5, 79% were enrolled in kindergarten, which is a lower percentage than the Slovenian average (81%). The primary schools had about 1,290 pupils in the 2021/2022 school year. Around 440 students attended different secondary schools. There were 31 students and 6 graduates per 1,000 people in the municipality; the number of students per 1,000 people in Slovenia is 39 students and 8 graduates.
